Some facts about diamonds

  • Diamonds are at least 3 million years old.
  • It is the hardest material in nature with a hardness grade of 10 on the Mohs scale.
  • It is pure carbon as expensive as graphite But diamond crystallizes in the cubic system while graphite crystallizes in the hexagonal system and that's why they have so many differences.
  • The diamond is only cut with a diamond. Within its structure there are some less hard crystalline shafts and we exploit them so that we can cut them with other diamonds.
  • They are made in very specific areas in the subsoil, called cationic areas, where they are located at a depth of about 150 kilometres.
  • The conditions prevailing in the cationic regions are high temperature, about 1200°C and high pressure, about 50 Kbar.
  • For every 100 tonnes of ore, we find 3 to 4 carats of diamonds in a profitable mine.
  • The unit of measurement for the weight of diamonds is the carat. It is derived from the word carob and corresponds to 0.2 grams.
  • The diamond "loves" fat. A natural property that makes it stick to fatty substances.
  • The largest diamond ever discovered was the Callinan, weighing 3,106.75 carats, which was cut into 105 individual pieces. The largest of these weighed 530.4 carats and adorns the crown of the royal family of Great Britain.
